Explosive Activity on K?lauea's Lower East Rift Zone Fueled by a Volatile?Rich, Dacitic Melt

چکیده
Magmas with matrix glass compositions ranging from basalt to dacite erupted a series of 24 fissures in the first 2 weeks 2018 Lower East Rift Zone (LERZ) eruption K?lauea Volcano. Eruption styles ranged low spattering and fountaining strombolian activity. Major element trajectories glasses melt inclusions hosted by olivine, pyroxene plagioclase are consistent variable amounts fractional crystallization, incompatible elements (e.g., Cl, F, H2O) becoming enriched 4–5 times as MgO contents evolve 6 0.5 wt%. The high viscosity H2O (?2 wt%) dacitic melts erupting at Fissure 17 account for explosive Strombolian behavior exhibited this fissure, contrast observed basaltic basaltic-andesite melts. Saturation pressures calculated inclusion CO2-H2O indicate that magma reservoir(s) supplying these was located ?2–3 km depth, which is agreement depth body intercepted during drilling 2005 (?2.5 km) seismically imaged Vp/Vs anomaly depth). Nb/Y ratios products similar lavas between 1955 1960, indicating were stored underwent crystallization LERZ >60 years before being remobilized dike intrusion 2018. We demonstrate extensive generates viscous volatile-rich potential hazardous eruptions, may be lurking undetected many ocean island volcanoes.

Water diffusion in dacitic melt
H2O diffusion in dacitic melt was investigated at 0.48–0.95 GPa and 786–893 K in a piston-cylinder apparatus. The diffusion couple design was used, in which a nominally dry dacitic glass makes one half and is juxtaposed with a hydrous dacitic glass containing up to 8 wt.% total water (H2Ot). H2O concentration profiles were measured on quenched glasses with infrared microspectroscopy. The H2O di...
متن کاملThe speciation of dissolved H2O in dacitic melt
We report the first systematic study of H2O speciation in dacitic melt with total dissolved H2O ranging from 1.4 to 2.6 wt%. Samples were heated in a one-atmosphere tube furnace at 480–590 °C for certain durations and then quenched in water or air. Species concentrations were measured with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. At a given temperature, the equilibrium constant for the r...
متن کاملThe Effect of Lower Detachment Zone on Buckle Folds Geometry
Buckle folds are common traps for hydrocarbon in several contractional provinces. Buckle folds form where stratified sequences rest a top salt or some other utterly weak rock as a decollemet zone in units with high competency contrasts by a compressive stress which acted along the length of the rock layers. An important parameter affecting buckle folding of a competent zone above a mobile decol...
متن کاملEast African Rift System - an Overview
The main characteristics of the East African Rift System are outlined from selected references. The difference between the Eastern Rift with high volcanicity on two domal uplifts as against the Western Rift of restricted volcanism, but sediment and lake filled grabens is pointed out. This is also evident from the earthquake activity: Large earthquakes occur in the Western Rift, whereas earthqua...
متن کاملfor a crustal magma reservoir beneath the upper east rift
An anomalous body with low Vp (compressional wave velocity), low Vs (shear wave velocity), and high Vp/Vs anomalies is observed at 8–11 km depth beneath the upper east rift zone of Kilauea volcano in Hawaii by simultaneous inversion of seismic velocity structure and earthquake locations. We interpret this body to be a crustal magma reservoir beneath the volcanic pile, similar to those widely re...
